Improving well-being at work: 5 tips for the ideal work environment

Does your work environment influence the well-being of your employees? It certainly does!

What is the secret to happy employees? Engaging job content, a good salary, and great colleagues? These all play a role, but the work environment also has a significant impact on the well-being of your staff. Discover how to create an inspiring workplace that promotes the motivation and job satisfaction of your entire team.

Well-being at work: do not forget your work environment

In many companies, job satisfaction is increasingly high on the agenda. Fortunately so, because employees who feel comfortable at the office experience less stress, are more productive, and keep the atmosphere light. Flexible schedules, personal growth plans, and open communication go a long way. However, a comfortable work environment is also indispensable.

“When employees have a pleasant workplace, it has a real impact on their motivation and well-being,” says Prof. Dr. Anja Van den Broeck, work motivation expert at KU Leuven, in this article from Tempo-Team. “Employers are not always aware of this.”

Ambient noise, an overcrowded office, insufficient daylight, and little attention to ergonomics – these things give us the chills. After a long period of working from home, with its many comfy & cozy benefits, we would rather not return to the pre-corona workplace.

1. Improve office acoustics

Noise is distracting and can be downright annoying. Reduce the decibel levels in the office with sound-absorbing materials, such as:

  • acoustic desk screens
  • sound-absorbing wall panels or curtains
  • cabinets with upholstery
  • floor covering with carpet or needle felt
  • plants, green walls, or moss walls

Additionally, agree that your employees step away for phone calls or video calls. This allows their colleagues to continue working undisturbed. An acoustic call pod or phone booth is particularly useful: they can make calls there or focus in absolute silence, and your meeting rooms remain available.

2. Let your employees choose where they work

Now more than ever, we need our own bubble. Ensure that everyone can maintain distance from one another and provide sufficient ventilation. This leads to a sense of safety and mental peace.

Create space by alternating individual desks with ‘activity-based’ areas. Think of: meeting rooms, brainstorm spaces, focus areas, a coffee corner… This allows your employees to choose for themselves where they prefer and work best. Freedom is happiness! That is the starting point of hybrid workplaces.

3. Insufficient daylight? Opt for dynamic lighting

Sitting indoors all day in a poorly lit work environment? That disrupts your biological clock and can make you feel despondent.

But surely not everyone can choose a spot by the window in your office. Dynamic lighting offers a bright solution: it imitates the changes in color and light intensity of sunlight. In our Concept Place in Knokke, we are experimenting with this, together with our partner Modular. Feel free to drop by!

4. Focus on ergonomics

An incorrect working posture, prolonged sitting, and unadapted work equipment quickly lead to painful shoulders, wrist, neck, and back complaints, or strained and tired eyes. Striving for an ergonomically designed work environment is a must for the well-being of your team.

But how do you do that? With our 6 practical tips, you can implement ergonomics throughout your entire office.

5. Provide an inspiring workplace

If your employees telework regularly, your office becomes more of a meeting place where colleagues collaborate. If you want to see them walking through the door with a whistle, it is important that there is a pleasant, motivating atmosphere.

The design of your office can stimulate company spirit and engagement. And thus, motivation skyrockets. Frédéric de Kriek recently shared his vision on this in ‘The New Way of Working’ by Mediaplanet.
